"A well-to-do gentleman emerged from a boutique with a large shopping bag. As he strolled down the sidewalk, a frail man in tattered clothes approached him "Excuse me, sir, can you spare some change?"

"Why certainly," the well-dressed man replied. He reached into his pockets for...nothing. "Please forgive me," he said. "I have nothing to offer you right now." Then he turned away in embarrassment and walked back to the store.

A few minutes later, the well-dressed man again emerged from the boutique - with cash in hand, which he offered to the needy man.
